And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I am currently rereading 1984 and it is frightening how many things in this novel are coming true; or have already been implemented. It's almost as if the book has been used as a manual for our system of government.

ReplyDeleteOrwell knew his stuff. Homage to Catalonia is good too. I didn't know he got shot in the neck while fighting on the front lines in Spain.
